Chapter Twelve

He did not want to deal with his own broken heart and Aloysius’s too. “Do not sit there pretending I screwed this up, feline. You’re the one who lost him for both of us.” Killian flipped over so he was facing the back of the couch and couldn’t see Al’s accusatory face. Sick. Sick of letting the cat see him cry. Sick at heart at the loss of his hopes. The only true dream he’d ever had.

He sat up, hugging his knees. Hate this maudlin nonsense. He had two choices. Kill himself, or go on. Of course, he could just refuse to marry Lavender, and her father would kill him, so no suicide would be required. Killing himself was cowardly, but he was a coward. Otherwise he would have told all of fucking witchery to go screw itself. He’d been bred like some champion steer to produce offspring for the community. Hell, even if he’d been straight, he would have hated it. What did he care if he lost his powers? What good had being a witch ever done…?

Powers. He looked up to find the blue eyes staring at him. “Why haven’t I lost my powers, Al? At least some of them? From what I’ve always been told, I should be a puddle on the floor.”

He got up and walked to the kitchen, Al trotting behind. Killian grabbed a beer from the built-in refrigerator, twisted the cap, and took a sip. He leaned against the counter. “So maybe the depletion takes longer still. Maybe twice isn’t enough. That’s not what they told us as children, but maybe.” Maybe it would happen if he had more sex with Blaine. Whoa. Even the thought made his cock leap. Maybe.

He walked back to the living room couch and sat. Al jumped up beside him, crossing one paw over the other as he seemed to do when he was waiting for Killian to finally catch on.

“But it hasn’t happened, Al, and if it isn’t going to happen, then the community is living a lie.”

But if it wasn’t going to happen, then why in the Powers’ name had witchery declined as it had? If it wasn’t the fault of humans, whose fault was it?

He wanted to pick up his phone and call one of the witch/human married couples. He could ask them about their experience. But the mixed-race families were so shunned by the community, he had no direct contact or access to them. Wait. Lavender.

He grabbed his cell and dialed.

“This is Lavender. Is that you, Killian?”

“Hi. I have some really important questions. Any chance I could see you?”

“Daddy’s been watching me like some eagle, but he surely can’t object to me seeing my fiancé.”

“Yes, well, he probably can, but let’s risk it. Meet me at the Moon Garden. No one will think of it, and Aloysius likes egg drop soup.”

“You’re on.”

A half hour later, Killian admired Lavender’s beautiful, erect posture as she walked into the Chinese restaurant. He could sure tell he was gay, or he would have been admiring her pretty, bouncing breasts.
